Abstract
Drama structure and characters are two interrelated elements which by changing one, the other one also changes. The role of character is to importindividuals characteristics and their physical featuresinto drama in a way to justify their actions and decision.This goal is accomplished through applying characterization techniques.By taking descriptive-analytic approach and by taking into account character definitions and characterization principles, the present study aims at investigating one of the most significant Arab dramatic work entitled "Shahrzad".In this line, firstly, an attempt is made to examine the namology aspect of characters. Secondly, the characters are analyzed in two separate divisions and lastly,the applied characterization techniques are investigated. Considering namologyaspect,the characters in this drama are classified in two iconic and symbolic groups and with respect to theirtype, they are placed in two spherical and flat groups.Regarding the characterization techniques, it is found that Towfigh Al Hakim has given special attention towriting techniques and characters role, both of whichin explicit and implicit ways. Through dialogue, he also portrays and indicatesconflict as one of the key elements in his work.
